The hashtag symbol (#) has become a lot popular on the social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The hashtag trend was originally made famous by twitter and later people started using on many major social media platforms. In this post we will focus on the use of Hashtags on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
So before going in to more details let’s first learn what does ‘Hashtag’ mean.
Basically hashtag is nothing but a query/keyword spelled out without sapces, with a pound sign (#) in front of it. For example, #Socialmedia, #Fashion, #Marketing, etc.
So when you put your query in the above form in the search box of social media platforms like twitter, Instagram, etc. all the posts regarding to the your query will show up in the search results.
Now let’s see how hashtag work on different social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
A Twitter hashtag brings together conversations/posts of different users in one stream. If two people who are not following each other talk about the same topic using a particular hashtag, their tweets will appear in the same stream.

All the trending hashtags on twitter are present on the left side of your screen and if you want search for a particular hashtag put that hashtag in the search box.
These trends usually keep changing every 3-4 hours according to our observations. Although there are few particular hashtags for particular days that trend for the entire day example #Mondaymotivation, #Tuesdaythoughts, #Wednesdaywisdom, #Thrusdaythoughts #fridayfeelings, etc. You can use this hashtags in your posts. Don’t use more than 3-4 hashtags in your post as it may appear.
An Instagram hashtag brings together posts of different users in one stream just like Twitter. If two people who are not following each other talk about the same topic using a particular hashtag, their posts will appear in the same stream.
As you can see we have used #FlashbackFriday as an example, now all the posts regarding it will show up.
On Instagram you can use upto 30 hashtags per post but it is advisable to post 11 hashtags. As studies show posts with 11 hashtags have the best engagement.
Like twitter, Instagram also has popular hashtags which your brand must be using example #instagood, #instagrammers, #instamood, #tbt, #ThrowbackThursday, #FlashbackFriday, #ManicMonday, #WisdomWednesday, #NoFilter, etc.
You should definitely use this popular hashtags but only when they are relevant to your post.
Use more hashtags relevant to your niche.
- What are your keywords?
- What are peers/competitors/influencers using?
- What does Instagram suggest as related?
Make sure your account is public. As long as your account is public, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Instagram post.
Like on twitter and Instagram a Facebook hashtag brings together posts of different users in one stream. But unlike Twitter and Instagram where most people have public accounts and their post can be seen by anyone, most people on Facebook have private accounts and hence their post are also private. This means even if an individual whose account is private is using hashtags, they aren’t searchable. So when you search a hashtag on Facebook the result tend to be the posts published by influencers, brands and publishers with that particular hashtag.
To use a hashtag on Facebook, all you have to do is publish a Facebook post to your Page or timeline that includes the hashtag.
If you want people other than the people in your Facebook friend list to be able to find your post be sure your post is public. To make a Facebook post public, click on the button to the right of "Post" and choose "Public" from the dropdown menu.
